THE 1878 MILWAUKEE GRAYS

Milwaukee fielded a team in the League Alliance in 1877. The Alliance was a loose affiliate of the National League. That team won 19 and lost 13, good for fourth place. They filled out their schedule against all manner of opponents, from college teams to the NL's Chicago White Stockings (a match that ended in a 10-7, 10-inning loss).

The team's sharp style and strong hometown support won them a National League berth in 1878, joining three inaugural teams: the Boston Red Caps, Cincinnati Red Stockings and Chicago White Stockings. Joining the Milwaukee Grays in being new to the league were the Providence Grays and Indianapolis Blues.

John L. Kaine, editor of the Milwaukee Sentinel and president of the Grays hired former Alliance star Jack Chapman, who had managed the NL's Louisville Grays the previous two seasons. Alas, declining field play and falling profits led to the disbanding of the club after just one season.
