THE 1878 MILWAUKEE GRAYS

May 4, 1878 at Cincinnati
Grays lose to Reds, 4-1
Season record: 0-3

The Cincinnatis defeated the Milwaukees, today, for a third time by a score of 4 to 1. It was the most beautiful and plucky exhibition of playing on the part of the Cincinnatis ever seen here. Three times during the game, the Milwaukees got men on the second and third bases with only one man out, and were unable to tally a run. They made their only run on a fumble by Will White [note: White would start 52 games for Cincinnati – and complete them all], a wild pitch and a fumble by Gerhardt, who was playing with a very lame leg. The batting of the Cincinnatis and the dogged, stubborn work of the White brothers [note: Deacon White, a catcher, is the other White. He would hit .314, second-best on the team, in 1878] were characteristics of the Cincinnatis play. Dalrymple made a remarkable fly catch of Jones’ hit in the seventh inning. George Seward of St. Louis umpired with excellent satisfaction.

Notable
- There was a box score included with this game. Bill Holbert, Milwaukee’s RF, made three of the team’s seven errors (but down again!). Dalrymple and George Creamer each went 2-for-4. The Grays had no extra-base hits. However, 3B Will Foley and 2B John Peters turned a double play. Sam Weaver, who would pitch in 45 games (43 starts, 39 complete games) pitched for Milwaukee. Time of the game was 1 hour, 50 minutes.
- The pitching-catching combination of the Whites was the first time in major-league history that brothers were both parts of a battery. The two played with Cincinnati in the previous season, but never as pitcher and catcher at the same time.
