THE 1878 MILWAUKEE GRAYS
May 10, 1878 at Indianapolis
Grays lose to Blues, 6-1
Season record: 1-4-1
The game here today was one of the finest exhibitions of base ball, on the part
of the home club, ever witnessed in this city. A total of 9 base hits was made
off Weaver, of the Milwaukees, while only four were made off Nolan. The home
club played with only one error.

- Here’s a quick fact on the
Milwaukee Grays. In 1877, the National League consisted of the Boston Red Caps,
Louisville Grays, Brooklyn Hartfords, St. Louis Brown Stockings, Chicago White
Stockings and Cincinnati Reds. In 1878, Louisville, Brooklyn and St.
Louis were replaced by Milwaukee, the Providence Grays and the
Indianapolis Blues. Louisville disbanded after the NL’s first
gambling scandal (four players were banned for life) – and this was only the
league’s second season! Louisville’s manager –
John Chapman – was hired as Milwaukee’s manager, and with him he brought
the nickname Grays. |
