THE 1878 MILWAUKEE GRAYS
June 3, 1878 at Providence
Grays lose to Providence, 6-2
Season record: 5-10-1
Our boys are having a sorry time down East. [Note: my how the tenor has changed
from just two days ago] They left here intending to show the Yankees [Note: So
only those on the east coast were called Yankees?] how to play ball, but they
have probably learned by this time that the New Englanders understand the game
too. In the third game between the Milwaukee and
Providence nines yesterday, the Milwaukee club received a
drubbing to the tune of 5 to 2. The following is the score, as furnished by the
Providence
correspondent of The News [Note: Reporters did not travel with the teams back
then, so they had to rely on other means. The 5-2 score was actually of the previous game.]
Notable
-
Milwaukee had seven
hits – Peters, Goodman and Foley each had two. Peters had a double and Goodman a
triple (one of his three on the season).
-
More great fielding by Milwaukee – 11 errors in
this one. Might be 12, hard to read.
-
Golden pitched and walked six – a
large amount in 1878 – and threw a wild pitch.
- The Grays played at Springfield on May 31 and won 7-0. It was common practice to play other professional teams on the frequent days off - after all, a few bucks could be made. |
