THE 1878 MILWAUKEE GRAYS
June 4, 1878 at Boston
Grays lose to Red Caps, 9-3
Season record: 5-11-1
There is no Milwaukee Daily News
editions available for a bit, but the June 8 edition does have this
note:
The Boston Herald says that in the first game between the Bostons and the
Milwaukees, “the features of the contest for the Milwaukees were the batting of
Peters and Golden, and the fielding of Peters, Creamer and
Dalrymple.”
The Globe in its report
of the same game says: “The Milwaukees were out-batted and out-fielded. The game
was well-played throughout, with good batting on both sides, but the errors of
the Milwaukees occurred at critical moments and proved very costly. Two
accidents occurred: one to Holbert, the catcher, a hot ball splitting the end of
his finger, necessitating a change of positions; and the collision of Dalrymple
and Creamer in the left field, by which both men were knocked down, but not
seriously injured.”
Notable
-
Milwaukee was
now solidly in last place with five wins and a .313 winning percentage.
