THE 1878 MILWAUKEE GRAYS

June 7, 1878 at Manchester, N.H.
Grays defeat Manchester, 3-0
Season record: 5-12-1

Sadly, this is not a National League game, so Milwaukee's record remains unchanged.

The Milwaukees and Manchesters played here today, and the former defeated the latter by a score of 3 to 0. It was a splendid game, the errors being few on both sides, and the fielding beautiful. Holbert’s hand was unfit for service, and Ellick went behind the bat, where he did good work, having one passed ball recorded against him. Weaver put in the balls in fine style, and when he did allow a bat to strike his ball, the splendid fielding of the Milwaukees put a stop to the progress of the strikers. Four innings were played before a tally was scored. Then the Milwaukees were credited with two in the fifth, and, in the seventh, with one more, the successful batters being Morgan, Ellick and Creamer.

Notable
- Ellick is Joe Ellick, who played five games with the St. Louis Red Stockings of the National Association in 1875. He played only 7 games and had a fantastic fielding percentage of .471 in five games at third base (9 errors) and .667 in two games in the outfield. This game doesn’t count in Ellick’s 1878 stats, and he would play in only three games with the Grays – yet he was one of three players who would later file charges of non-payment against Milwaukee.
- Manchester had five hits off Weaver, who batted fifth. Peters and Creamer (who batted last) each had two hits.
- Milwaukee committed five errors, two by the catcher Ellick.
- Flies caught is actually listed in the box score, with the Grays being credited with 11.
- Goodman (1B) and Peters (2B) are credited with two double plays.
