MILWAUKEE GRAYS 3 SHARON SLAMMERS 8 June 14, 2009 at Sharon, Wis. With the good weather finally upon us, a quick jaunt to Sharon was in order for a pair of seven-inning games. The Grays won the pre-game coin flip and decided to take the field. The Slammers would take a 2-0 lead, but Milwaukee would tie it up on run-scoring hits by Stickball (nee Pietkowitz) and Cletus, brother-in-law of Skeeter who joined the squad for the opening game. Neither team could break the tie though, with the Grays ingloriously hitting into - or rather running into - a triple play as Lefty was out on a one-bounce, Old Dog was thrown out at third and then Preacher was tagged out trying for second. The Grays would also hit into a double play, but, alas, so would the Slammers. Heading into the final frame it was still tied at 2. Spike led off and executed a perfect chop hit down the third-base line for a hit. Smokey then put one into the bushes in left field for a ground-rule double, the first time Milwaukee took advantage of that rule in the game - and it couldn't have come at a more opportune time. Skeeter then came through with a bounder to the right side, and while he was being thrown out, Spike hit the dish with the winning run. The Grays batted first in the second game and sent eight men to the plate, scoring three times. However, Smokey and Preacher were victims at the plate, both dead while trying to score. The Slammers came right back in their half and scored four times, finding that group of bushes for a few ground-rule doubles. Milwaukee fought back but Sharon had an answer for all of the runs the Grays could come up with. Rusty played a heck of a left field working behind the bush and limited view. Also, Dead Pull stuck it out for both games despite an illness. The statistics for the Grays were as follows: Game 1 Game 2 |
