THE 1878 MILWAUKEE GRAYS

July 6, 1878 at Milwaukee
Grays lose to Boston, 4-3 (11 inn.)
Season record: 7-21-1

Well, the Milwaukees can play. They have proved it in the last two games with the Champion Bostons. Yesterday was the sixth game between the two, and the Yankees [note: that would make a present-day Boston fan cringe], in spite of Bennett’s lame shoulder and one or [unreadable] serious errors by Foley required eleven innings in defeat the Milwaukees, and even then scored only four runs to three made by the home nine. For the Bostons, Burdock made one in the fourth, getting to first on an error by Foley and taking advantage of Bennett’s lame shoulder to steal second; while Manning and Burdock scored in the eighth and Morrill traveled home in the eleventh. For the Milwaukees, Peters and Goodman scored in the sixth and Peters added another in the ninth. The Bostons runs were all made through errors on the part of the home nine, while the first two by the Milwaukees were made in spite of the best efforts and most perfect work of their opponents. The excitement of the large crowd of spectators, during the progress of the game was intense, and broke into deafening cheers when Peters tied the game in the ninth inning.

Notable:
- Milwaukee was charged with 14 errors (10 of which gave Boston first base). Pitcher Weaver had three and catcher Bennett four.
- Boston only had four hits – two by the pitcher Bond.
- A list of upcoming games was provided, and it offers a glimpse of what pro teams did back in the day: Monday at Davenport, Ia.; Tuesday at Chicago; Wednesday at Peoria; Thursday at Chicago; Friday at Rockford; Saturday at Chicago. Mon-Wed home against Chicago, then “the Grays will leave on their second trip eastward.”
