LA CRESCENT APPLEJACKS 3
MILWAUKEE GRAYS 2

CINCINNATI RED STOCKINGS 13
MILWAUKEE GRAYS 6

Aug. 15, 2009 at Big Bend

Playing in the 6th annual Cream Citys tournament, the Grays had a chance to play some out-of-town teams.

In the first game, the Grays played the La Crescent Applejacks. After allowing a run in the top of the first, the Grays came right back with four consecutive singles to tie the game, with Rusty driving in Preacher.

The Grays took the lead in the fifth as Sparky singled home Handlebar (a Cream City playing for the short-handed Grays), but the Applejacks would score one each in the sixth and seventh innings to take the lead. Milwaukee couldn't push home the tying run in the ninth and had to settle for a well-played defeat.

The Grays grabbed the lead against the Red Stockings in the second game as Rusty and Sparky hit back-to-back doubles to open the second inning, Sparky's shot clearing the fence.

However, Cincinnati's well-placed hitting and fine defense proved to be too much for the Grays, who broke down a bit in the later innings as the Red Stockings opened up a 3-2 lead with four runs in the fifth and five in the sixth.

Tired, but not unbowed, the Grays struck for three runs in the ninth to at least go out with a bang, and not a whimper.

Both games were played to the full nine innings on a nice, hot afternoon day.
