David "Smokey" Ornstein

Height: 5-foot-9
Weight: 175
Throws: Right
Bats: Right
Age: 33
Home: Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Birthplace: Appleton, Wisconsin
Explanation of nickname:  When I joined the Milwaukee Cream Citys in 2006 I was told I would need to come up with a nickname. I'd never given myself a nickname and nobody on the club knew me well enough to give me one ... nor had I a chance to earn one. As my first match was getting close Gary "Handlebar" Hetzel asked that I decide on my name ASAP. Being a firefighter it was pretty easy to just go with "Smokey". Handlebar agreed. Absolutely nothing to do with "Smokey" Joe Wood.
Occupation: Firefighter
Favorite MLB team(s): Growing up it was the Los Angeles Dodgers, Milwaukee Brewers and the Appleton Foxes (A ball). Now I would say the Milwaukee Brewers and the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Favorite historical player(s): John McGraw, Honus Wagner and Walter Johnson. Throw in "Shoeless" Joe as well. He was pretty good.
How became involved with vintage base ball: In June of 2006 the Milwaukee Fire Department Honor Guard was to march in the parade at the V.A. grounds for the annual "Reclaiming Our Heritage" weekend. After I was finished with the parade I walked around the event and saw a sign that read "Base Ball Today" written in old-time lettering. I had to check that out. I came upon a match on an open green field, players with no gloves and those great uniforms of the Eagle Diamonds. KNICKERS! I was hooked. Found our that Handlebar was the guy to talk to and I was playing the next match for the Cream Citys ... against the Diamonds.
